Why Every English Teacher Recommends a Day Trip to Salisbury: Must-See Highlights

👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻 Firstly, a big hello! I know I’ve been very quiet on here recently but my temporary managerial role at a local language school has taken up all my time and energy, apologies! 😫 As I have previously said on my Instagram stories, I’ll be returning to online lessons in September and I can’t wait! 🚀🚀🚀

Salisbury, a city steeped in history and charm, has many intriguing aspects that make it a fascinating destination. Here are some interesting facts:

🩷 Salisbury Cathedral: Home to THE tallest spire in the U.K, standing at 404 feet (123 metres). The cathedral also houses one of the best-preserved original copies of the Magna Carta, dating back to 1215.

💜 Old Sarum: The original site of Salisbury, located a few miles north of the current city. Old Sarum was an Iron Age hillfort and later a Norman settlement, offering panoramic views and a glimpse into ancient history.

💙 The Clock: Salisbury Cathedral is home to one of the oldest working mechanical clocks in the world, believed to date back to 1386. This fascinating piece of engineering still operates without a dial, striking the hours by chimes.

🩵 The Close: Salisbury's Cathedral Close is the largest in Britain, encompassing 80 acres. It includes several historic houses, museums, and educational institutions, creating a serene and picturesque environment.

💚 Stonehenge Proximity: Just a short drive from Salisbury lies Stonehenge, one of the most famous prehistoric monuments in the world. Its close proximity makes Salisbury an ideal base for exploring this ancient site.

💛 Medieval Architecture: The city is renowned for its well-preserved medieval architecture. Walking through the streets of Salisbury, you'll encounter timber-framed houses, medieval inns, and the stunning Poultry Cross.

🧡 Market Place: Salisbury's market, held twice a week, has been a bustling hub since 1227. The Market Place is a vibrant spot where locals and visitors can buy fresh produce, crafts, and more.

❤️ Literary Connections: Salisbury has inspired many writers, including William Golding, the Nobel Prize-winning author of "Lord of the Flies," who was born and educated in the city.

🩷 The Avon River: The River Avon flows through Salisbury, adding to the city's scenic beauty. The riverside walks and views of the cathedral reflected in the water are particularly picturesque.

These facts highlight why Salisbury is not just a city of historical significance but also a living testament to England's rich cultural heritage.
